April Fools' Day: Too tame for today's dystopia? |
|
| April Fools' Day may be over, but it's hard to ignore how the tradition's charm has faded since Donald Trump entered office. After all, when you've witnessed the spectacle of his presidency, the usual pranks just seem, well, tame in comparison. What was once a day for harmless jokes now feels almost redundant. From hinting at a fourth term for a bizarre reason, to JD Vance's 'shocking' comments about Greenland, the line between reality and absurdity has become worryingly thin. Some people are even cancelling their trips to the US as a result of the what some have described as a 'dystopian nightmare'. Speaking of, later this month, there's something to look forward to: the return of Charlie Brooker's Black Mirror. In a world that's already feeling like a dystopian episode, that's one series we're actually excited to watch. | Welcome to the Indy100 newsletter | |

| If you've been on X, formerly Twitter, then you'll be familiar with the AI chatbot Grok, from Elon Musk's xAI - but the name "Grok" is at the center of a potential trademark dispute. xAI's trademark application was suspended by the US Patent and Trademark Office, as it argued the name could be confused with two companies - AI chipmaker Groq and software company Grokstream. In the latest development, a third company has come forward, tech startup Bizly, and says it owns the rights to the name, WIRED reported. Musk says he named his chatbot "Grok" after the word created by writer Robert A. Heinlein, meaning "to understand", which is used in his 1961 science fiction novel Stranger in a Strange Land, as per The Times of India. Then there's Bizly and xAI, both companies independently came up with this name. As for Bizly, its founder, Ron Shah, says "Grok" was the result of a brainstorming session with a colleague who used the word as a verb and in 2021 made a trademark application for the name. | Would you eat breast milk ice cream? Frida, a brand which creates and sells baby and postpartum products, has announced it will launch ice cream flavoured to taste like breast milk – and the desert is due to arrive in nine months' time. There may just be a gap in the market for this unusual flavour, which believe it or not, is not intended to be an April Fool's Day prank despite the timing of the announcement, a spokesperson confirmed to People. Instead, the launch of the breast milk frozen treat coincides with the brand's new 2-in-1 Manual Breast Pump. But according to the brand, breast milk is also having a trending moment and everyone is curious to try it as an adult so they can remember the taste. Both Kourtney Kardashian and Ashley Graham have said they tasted their own milk. According to a poll by BabyCenter, 70 per cent of mums have tried their own milk and about half described it as "delicious". | |

Fans of the legendary Japanese animation studio are making the most out of the OpenAI chatbot's latest update, which launched on Tuesday (March 25) as the company says is "the most advanced image generator yet," as a result of a "natively multimodal model capable of precise, accurate, photorealistic outputs". This latest addition to the GPT-4o has meant users can replicate the artistic style of filmmaker and studio co-creator Hayao Miyazaki, with some of the popular films created by the studio including Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro. Since this latest update, users have had a field day with Studio Ghibli-inspired pictures popping up everywhere on social media - here is a roundup of the most viral ones. "Today is a great internet day," one user declared as he shared popular memes in this format, such as the Distracted Boyfriend meme, the Olympic shooter meme of Turkish competitor Yusuf Dikec, and the Disaster Girl meme.
