How to Stop Tying Your Identity to Performance

Hiiiii 👋. High-functioning ADHD overachiever daughter of immigrants here who was basically raised to perform for her worth.

Do well in school.

Do well in friendships.

Do well in family dynamics.

Do well in finances.

Do well in life, period.

You grow up being told to get good grades, go to a good school, land the good job, be a good person. And then suddenly you're reading something telling you not to tie your identity to the things you produce. It feels almost offensive. Counterintuitive. Like…excuse me? Then what else do I measure myself by?

But that reaction should tell you how deeply it's wired into us.

Here's the truth most of us weren't raised with: you're worthy just because you exist.

Not because of your title.

Not because of your performance.

Not because you're the responsible one or the overachiever everyone depends on.

Just because.

You could lose your job. You could lose your marriage. You could lose your reputation. You could experience the kind of loss that strips away every external marker you once clung to.

And guess what? You still matter. Who you are is bigger than what you do.

There are countless stories of women who have lost careers, relationships, networks, reputations…and they still mattered. Their identity didn't evaporate with the title.

When I left a stable corporate job to build my own entrepreneurial world, this hit me fast. I could no longer say "I'm a VP of Marketing at XYZ Company" and be instantly understood, validated or admired. Saying that came with prestige — let's be honest. People knew what it meant. The approval was baked into the title.

Now, when someone asks what I do, it causes confusion. I do a lot of things. Most of it people don't fully understand. I'll never get that neat little "oh wow!" validation from a simple job title again.

And honestly? That's okay.

Because who I am is not my job. It's not my revenue or my accolades. It's not my performance reviews or follower count. My identity is rooted in my values, my character, my faith, my integrity, my habits, my leadership, my compassion.

My identity is who I am, not what I do.

How to Actually Untie Your Identity from Performance

Catch yourself when you introduce yourself by your job.

Lead with who you are, not what you do. Notice how uncomfortable it feels. That discomfort is data.

Ask yourself: If I lost this tomorrow, who would I be?

If the title, income or reputation disappeared overnight, what would remain? That's the real you.

Stop performing for external validation.

When you catch yourself trying to impress, pause. Would you still do it if no one knew about it?

Build your identity on things that can't be taken away.

Your character, values, integrity, kindness and faith. Those things are you — not your job title.

Get comfortable with being unknown.

You don't need people to be impressed. You don't need their praise. The freedom in letting go of prestige is worth every ounce of discomfort.

At the end of the day, who you are is not your resume, your revenue or your reputation.

It's your integrity, your humanity and your heart.

And none of that can be taken from you.
