In the warm light of day: more island adventures await | Summer, at least in the view of the airlines, begins today. When the clocks go forward on the last Sunday of March, the aviation summer season starts – along with plenty of new routes. Many are set to start in the coming days and weeks. This year there is a particularly tempting crop of Mediterranean islands on the departure screens – signalling more completion and choice of timings. From easyJet's revived Newcastle base, new links start tomorrow to Corfu and Malta – with Rhodes following on Tuesday. Jet2 will fly from Monday to Paphos in Cyprus, and the following day to the main airport in Crete, Heraklion. Western Sicily gets an unlikely new route from Bournemouth to Trapani on Ryanair.
Just how much of a buyer's market is it? On that link from Dorset to Trapani, you can fly out on 21 April and back a week later for £41 return. Make the most of it while low fares last. | |
| That is how the island of La Palma describes itself. The isle at the wild northwest of the Canaries has a mile-high National Park at its heart, and a web of more than 600 miles of hiking trails – plus some decent beaches and a pervading sense of tranquility. From Friday 3 April, Jet2 will fly from Manchester direct to La Palma, with Tui also flying in from Gatwick to Spain's very own emerald isle. | | |
| | Jet2 has announced numerous new routes this week, including a connection from London Gatwick to Menorca from 1 May (and from Luton on 5 May). The full list is worth taking a look at – Portugal, Italy and Croatia might now be easier for you to access. It's Menorca that I'm the most interested in, though. The quiet Balearic island is nowhere near as brash as its neighbours: the all-night parties of Ibiza have been swapped for gentle evenings in tavernas, while the family-friendly atmosphere of Mallorca is retained, but on a smaller scale. While it's certainly no shrinking violet, the sun-drenched atoll isn't quite as popular as its neighbours (nor the Greek islands further to the east). This is a good thing: it means hikes along its dramatic, 20-stage coastal path are private affairs; the bursts of spring foliage surprisingly intimate. Heading there before the height of summer makes this doubly true, when the breezy hiking route can feel entirely yours. |

| | Menorca's coves, hugged by powdery beaches, are unbeatable. Mornings should be spent reading on a sun lounger with a good store of snacks; afternoons are made for swimming in the shockingly clean – and warm – sea. Bring a snorkelling set, because the ocean is giddy with starfish, seagrass and octopi. The range of hotels and villas mean all budgets are catered for (although I would recommend booking somewhere with a pool). And both Mahon, the capital, and Ciutadella in the west, have charming old towns, dotted with traditional restaurants. Jet2's schedule opens up a range of destinations for this year's getaway. For me, the link to Menorca is too good to resist. |
