Streeting goes to war with doctors |
Wes Streeting says the BMA is not "serious" about reaching an agreement on doctors' pay. Writing exclusively for The Independent, the health secretary accused resident doctors of being unable to "agree among themselves on an alternative" way forward, and said that when ministers asked the BMA to put propose a way to get a deal over the line they received instead "another rejection of the offer on the table".
In a hardening of the government's line, Streeting has withdrawn a plan to introduce 1,000 training places, saying that the strike due to start on Tuesday means that the money will no longer be available.
Sean O'Grady writes that the BMA has forced Keir Starmer to get tough – showing "strong, principled leadership for a change". I wrote on Tuesday that the BMA's unreasonable demands have lost public opinion and forced the prime minister to find the courage to take a stand.
