Welcome to Power Up, the new Reuters newsletter focused on all things energy, which will help you understand the world that powers our vehicles and keeps our lights on, delivered to your inbox twice a week.
I'm David Gaffen, and I've been an energy editor at Reuters for more than six years, working with colleagues across the globe, from Dubai to Singapore to Houston to London, capturing all of the daily ins and outs of the energy business during one of the most challenging times for the sector in decades. I've been part of the team that has been on top of the shale revolution, Exxon's battle with investors seeking more investment in the global energy transition, and the market meltdown of 2020, when prices fell below $0 for the first time in history.
The world runs on power, and without it, economies can't really survive – but the day-to-day of these markets is challenging to understand, and Power Up will get right to the point, drawing on the expertise of the vast Reuters energy team around the globe, a group that has their ear to the ground in the places that use the most energy, like China, those that produce the most, like Saudi Arabia, and ones that do both, like the United States. It will offer analysis of what's happening on the ground in the oil, natural gas, nuclear, biofuels, power and renewable sectors, and help people get a better hold on an industry that has been upended by the events of the last few years.
