🌷 Hello, Saturday! It's Laura, channeling my inner Lily Bloom today and going flower picking.

🌤 Weather: Partly cloudy with a high of 89.

🍖 Situational awareness: Tomorrow is National Burnt Ends Day and to celebrate Midwood Smokehouse has a couple of specials through the weekend, like a burnt end combo plate for $21 and their "Burnie Mac" for $16.

Today's Smart Brevity™️ count is 493 words — a 2-minute read.

1 big thing: 🏃🏻‍♀️ Around the Crown this weekend

Hundreds of runners will swarm Uptown for the Around the Crown 10K tomorrow.

Why it matters: Proceeds benefit multiple local nonprofits.

  • The race takes place along the three-mile inner loop of I-277 so expect traffic delays around Uptown.

What's next: Registration is still open for the race and can be done virtually or in person.

What to expect: Wander through seven homes and enjoy a beverage and lite bites while you chat about your favorite homes.

  • A few local restaurants are offering specials during the event, like half-price appetizers at Foxcroft Wine Co., a complimentary homemade spread at Kid Cashew, a free appetizer or starter at the Penguin, and 30% off appetizers at QC Pour House.

Details: The event takes place Sept. 13-14.

  • Tickets are $35 and can be purchased online or in person at Paper Skyscraper, Dilworth Drug, Park Road Books and BraveWorks.

3. 📝 What we learned this week

🚌 Monday was the first day of school for CMS students, and your student's teacher is probably paying out of pocket for supplies.

🚊 The future east-west Silver Line light rail, if it's ever built, won't drop you and your suitcase off right at CLT's real front door, but it will come close — about a mile away.

🥤 A new smoothie shop will open at Camp North End in mid-September.

🛤 The city of Charlotte wants to buy 22 miles of Norfolk Southern's O-Line for $74 million and land near the future Charlotte Gateway Station for $17 million.

✈️ Charlotte Douglas International Airport estimates more than a million people will fly through Charlotte this Labor Day weekend.

🍳 Biscuit Belly, a Kentucky-based brunch chain, opened in Elizabeth.

🏙 Charlotte City Club, an exclusive membership club in Uptown, has made recent changes to appeal to a broader audience, adding more events and a new food-pricing method.

🥇 The 2024 Paralympic Games started this week, and a few Charlotteans are competing.

The Green Room is hosting a cocktail pop-up event inspired by the 1966 surf classic "The Endless Summer."

What to expect: For $20 per person, you get a welcome punch and three hors d'oeuvres.

  • Plus, the menu features other themed cocktails, mocktails and dishes.

If you go: The event is every Friday and Saturday through Sept. 28.

  • The Green Room is located inside Lincoln Street Kitchen & Cocktails in South End.

📚 Did you get that "It Ends With Us" reference up top? Not my favorite book tbh, but I did watch the movie to support Charlotte's latest rumored resident.

  • If you want to read a book that takes place in Charlotte, give "The Promise of Tomorrow" a try. Author A.D. Haywood is from nearby Indian Trail.
