Whether you’re just starting or struggling to level up, this post will show you how my accelerator can take your business to new heights.

Consistency: The Superpower for Success

Consistency is one of the most powerful tools in achieving success, but it’s often one of the most challenging to maintain.

In this info post, I’ll walk you through tactical steps to make consistency your superpower and set you on the path to achieving your goals.

With over 34 years of professional experience, I’ve learned that both good and bad consistency can shape your journey.

My goal today is to help you cultivate the right habits and mindset to reach your full potential.

The first step in achieving any goal is to clearly define it.

What do you want your career, business, and personal life to look like? This vision is your north star, guiding every decision you make.

For example, I didn’t just envision myself as a photographer; I saw myself as a leader, a mentor to others in the industry.

This vision became the foundation for The Carty Method.

To bring your vision to life, reverse-engineer it into yearly, monthly, weekly, and daily goals, breaking down each milestone into actionable steps.

My journey over the past 5 years has been fueled by consistency. Both good consistency, but before I got there, I was full of bad consistency.

Step 1: Set Clear Goals

• Actionable Step: Define your vision for various areas of your life and career (photography, business, personal life, etc.).

• Qualitative Measure: Who do you want to be, and what does that look like?

• My Example: I envisioned myself not just as a photographer but as a leader in the industry, someone who helps others transition from struggling photographers to thriving professionals. I see myself mentoring photographers worldwide, building a community that empowers creatives to turn their passion into a sustainable business. This vision became the foundation for The Carty Method.

• Reverse Engineering: Break down this vision into yearly, monthly, weekly, and daily goals.

  • Yearly Goal: Define what you want to achieve by the end of the year—maybe it’s launching a new phase of The Carty Method or growing your community by a certain number of members.

  • Monthly Goal: Set milestones for each month that align with your yearly goal, like creating content, hosting workshops, or securing new clients.

  • Weekly/Daily Goals: Break these milestones down into actionable steps you can take every week and every day, such as developing necessary skills, networking with photographers, and refining your portfolio.

Step 2: Choose Supporting Behaviours

• Actionable Step: Evaluate your current behaviours and categorize them into three types:

  1. Start: Identify new behaviours that will propel you toward your goals.

     • Example: I started consistently creating educational content for my YouTube channel, sharing insights and practical tips that align with The Carty Method. This helped me reach and mentor more photographers.

  2. Stop: Identify and eliminate behaviours that deter you from reaching your goals.

     • Example: I eliminated time-wasting activities that didn’t contribute to my business growth, like playing video games, watching TV, or consuming content that wasn’t related to my goals.

  3. Continue: Maintain behaviours that help you achieve your goals.

     • Example: I continued with my YouTube channel because I treated it as a business. An opportunity to develop a system for one-on-one mentoring sessions, knowing they were instrumental in helping photographers make real progress.

Step 3: Engineer Your Environment for Success

• Actionable Step: Create an environment that makes it easy to start positive behaviours and difficult to continue negative ones.

  • Example: In my workspace, I organize my space to be dedicated to different tasks—editing photos, filming, coaching—so that I can seamlessly transition between activities without distractions. Everything in my office is on casters, making it easy to adapt my environment to my workflow that day. I’ve even set up an outdoor desk and area where I can work while I enjoy the sunshine.

• Supporting Research: It takes about 66 days for a new behaviour to become automatic, so setting up your environment to support this transition is crucial.

Step 4: Reward Consistent Progress

• Actionable Step: Reinforce consistent behaviours with positive rewards.

  1. External Reinforcement: Engage with your community or colleagues to reinforce your behaviours.

     • Example: I ask for feedback and get constant encouragement from my community of photographers when they see the results of their work after applying what they learn through my YouTube channel and The Carty Method. Their success reinforces my commitment to continue developing my programs.

  2. Self-Reinforcement: Set up a reward system for yourself.

     • Example: I reward myself with time off or start a personal creative project or take a short photography trip after completing a major milestone in my business, like launching a new course or hitting a subscriber goal on YouTube. I also buy my business little gifts, like my Carty sign or my Shure SM7B microphone, which I can write off and that will advance a part of my business.

Step 5: When in Doubt, Stick to the Fucking Plan

• Actionable Step: Maintain patience and trust the process, even when results aren’t immediate. When you start working out after a lifetime of not working out, the results aren’t immediate. It takes months of consistency before you see any results. The same is true with your photography career. If you do the work that I am laying out for you over the next 6 months, there really is no way your career won’t progress. The only way my system doesn’t work is if you don’t do the work.

• What You Track, You Improve: Not tracking your data? Your numbers? Your business? What do you expect the result to be?

  • Tracking and Measuring: Regularly track your progress. If you’re not seeing results, ensure you’re accurately following the plan.

  • Example: I realized that I wasn’t networking as much as I thought, so I made it a point to measure my outreach efforts and adjusted my approach. As a result, I saw more engagement and growth in my community.
