| Hello, and welcome to another Independent Voices roundup. This week, the UK government's decision to deny compensation to what could be millions of "Waspi women" has stirred up a hornet's nest. The women involved argue that they were disadvantaged due to government failings in communicating changes to the state pension age. In our editorial, we highlighted the government's troubling pattern of breaking its election promises. From the Waspi 'betrayal' to cuts in winter fuel payments, this latest controversy underscores the government's ongoing inconsistency. John Rentoul pointed out that Labour has continued to alienate large groups of the electorate —not just pensioners, but also employers, farmers, and private school parents. By distancing itself from the demographic most likely to vote, Keir Starmer now faces the challenge of shaking off accusations that his government is prone to saying one thing and doing another. Catherine Pepinster, born at the tail end of the Fifties — just a few months shy of an arbitrary cut-off imposed three decades ago — will miss out on £60,000 in pension payments. However, she also said the real blow is the ease with which the government breaks its promises. Until next week! |

| Having problems with work, love, family or friends? Get in touch with | I've put 'evil' in quotation marks because I don't think you're 'evil' at all. If you were saying to me that you wished your daughter-in-law ill because of the way she's treating you, I'd be worried. Add an eye of newt and toe of frog and hey presto: 'evil' mother-in-law. But, you're not. In fact, unless you're hiding some of the story (or are in denial about your own actions), it sounds like you genuinely wish to make amends. Read more. | |
| Neither the EU nor the US is likely to offer good terms. The EU will want more than we should accept, and the US will offer what suits them. Aim to be independent, so we don't have to bend over to trade with either. The Commonwealth was better than both, but we let that slip away in favour of the EU. |

| We need strong relationships with both America and the EU, and there's no reason we can't achieve both. But with that clown David Lammy running the Foreign Office, it's hard to see how that's going to happen. |

| Is the Syrian rebel leader someone Britain should be doing business with? |
|
| "The new regime in Syria is led by Abu Mohammad al-Julani, the head of Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a terrorist organisation. Not so long ago, Al-Julani was listed as a "specially designated global terrorist" by the US State Department and had a bounty of $10m on his head. So I am baffled by the foreign secretary David Lammy stating in the House of Commons that the UK should be merely 'cautious' about the new Syrian regime," writes Louis Shawcross to The Independent. Vote in the poll above and remember to come back next week to see how your opinion stacks up with other readers. Last week, 65 per cent of readers said Starmer's promise of 1.5 million homes is impossible, following a letter from Graham Kelley. | |
