New Year's never appealed to me much as it always seemed anticlimactic. That changed, however, when I was fourteen years old. That was the year my dad suggested our family pack up and drive 500 miles north to ring in the New Year's holiday at our 600-square-foot lake cabin in northern Michigan. At first, I was hesitant.
