In 2025, we’ll all be taking sound baths and dressing like fishermen

Happy new year and welcome to this week's edition of The Independent's lifestyle newsletter.

I don't make the rules, but if you didn't spend 2024 contorting your body on a medieval-looking apparatus in a reformer pilates class, then you were embarrassingly out-of-touch. Well, that's an exaggeration. What I mean is that 2024 was the year that everyone and their nan's friend's cousin became wellness-obsessed. The past 12 months saw us latch onto a range of luxury wellness trends – once exclusive to the rich and famous – that have seeped down into the lives of us mere mortals.

We witnessed reformer pilates studios appear in every city, teens (worryingly) using anti-ageing skincare products, adults becoming self-anointed pharmacists as part of the magnesium craze, and some of us falling for the "healthy" yoghurts supposedly packed with protein. There was a lot to unpack.

But it's 2 January now and you're probably more inclined to be looking forward at the 12 blank months that stand before us. Looking backwards is so last year. You'll be pleased to know that I've looked into my crystal ball – with the help of fashion and lifestyle experts – to find out what questionable trends we can expect for 2025.

Among them are the fisherman aesthetic (think cable knit jumpers and yellow raincoats galore), wellness coffees (imagine your daily supplements packed into one energising drink) and a new sound healing trend (AKA sitting around listening to shamanic drums and gongs). Whether they're worth trying out, or getting attached to, is up to you. Find out more about them here.

Think beige cable knit sweaters in the winter, a yellow raincoat for spring showers and leather fisherman sandals for the summer.
