Around 370 North Atlantic right whales remain. Conservationists are focused on improving monitoring efforts for this highly endangered species. Whale surveys are essential for identifying and cataloging each right whale calf that is born. One effective tool used in these surveys is passive acoustic detection, which enables researchers to listen to whales underwater. Unfortunately, human activities are the primary threat to right whales. One of the main dangers is collisions with boats. The Atlantic migration route, which connects West African nations with the Spanish Canary Islands, set a new record in 2024. At least 46,843 migrants arrived, surpassing the previous year’s record, representing a 17% increase, according to yearly figures released by Spain's Interior Ministry. Migrants often travel over 1,000 miles to reach the islands. Some come from Africa to escape armed conflict, poverty or lack of opportunity. Rappers GloRilla, Latto and Doechii have different musical styles, but they have one thing in common: They are all Southern women shaping the future of hip-hop. In 2024, the three artists, repping Memphis, Atlanta and Tampa, delivered landmark albums showcasing their unique styles with impressive bars. NPR’s Sidney Madden says the women are "taking their shot at the top and not waiting for the dust to settle." She adds that what binds them together is the "commitment to trusting in their vision, their rigor and their redemption over the increasing noise of hype." Take a look at each of their journeys. |
