One of my favorite stories of the year is talking to the parents of the first baby born in the county in the new year. There's nothing like speaking with two individuals who are filled with hope and joy after welcoming their little one.
Today, first-time parents Marissa Wood and Sean Markham met
their son Baker at 9:47 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 1 at PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center. And yes, their son is named after the mountain they live 45 minutes from in Maple Falls. Their first date was at Mount Baker.
Markham, who described him and his partner as snow enthusiasts, said he can't wait to take his "permanent ride buddy" up to Baker when he's a bit older. Wood said it would be a full-circle moment. You can start the new year off right by reading the story below.

Food and yard waste make up 30% of the residential waste stream, meaning it's a significant component of landfill volume and a major opportunity for diversion. All single-family households in Bellingham will be required to use curbside organics collection in 2025. (Julia Tellman/Cascadia Daily News)
