Mark Carney did not mince words as he took the stage at a victory party Monday evening after a resounding victory for his Liberal Party.
"President Trump is trying to break us so America can own us," Carney said.
"Our old relationship with the United States, a relationship based on steadily increasing integration, is over," said Canada's next prime minister. "We are over the shock of the American betrayal, but we should never forget the lessons."
His party has vowed to fight America with strategic tariffs aimed at hurting the American economy and protection for Canadian industries that might be affected.
Carney's victory is notable as the rival Conservative Party was widely seen as on course for a win before the US-Canada trade war erupted.
Now, the White House finds itself pressed to outline the Trump administration's accomplishments as the president reaches the 100-day mark beset by fears that his tariff agenda will throw the US economy into recession and badly damage US relationships around the world.
In the case of China, Trump is being accused of lying about trade talks even taking place at all. China's foreign ministry swatted away that assertion last week after the president claimed that progress was being made towards a deal.
In short: Trump's usual bluster seems to have reached an expiration point.
