Green, raw coffee beans are one of the imports for which a domestic alternative is simply not available to meet demand. Good U.S. growing conditions for coffee only exist in Hawaii and Puerto Rico. About 99% has to be imported.
However, while coffee tariffs are an additional cost for the well-regarded cluster of roasters in Bellingham and Burlington, they are only the latest in a series of pricing pressures. As a spokesperson from Royal Coffee, a large importer with a warehouse in the Puget Sound region, told me, it's "going to be a bumpy ride."
