Dear CDN readers, subscribers, and supporters,
We're three!
Cascadia Daily News launched online in January 2022, followed by our first print edition published on March 2, 2022. CDN was created with a clear mission: Fill a local news void in Northwest Washington with a digital and print news service staffed by professionals capable of filling the traditional role of a broad-based daily newspaper. Over the past three years, we've worked hard to fulfill that mission—delivering fiercely independent, local news that keeps our community informed and engaged. We are tremendously grateful for the enthusiastic support and acceptance we have received from our readers, subscribers, and advertisers.
CDN is locally owned, edited, and managed. Our 16 reporters, editors, and visual journalists live locally and work in our newsroom in downtown Bellingham. We report breaking and enterprise news on matters that impact local residents. We are a for-profit company funded through subscriptions, single-copy sales, advertising, and the substantial contributions of our founder and owner. While we are extremely grateful for CDN's community embrace to date, we also know that subscriptions and advertising revenue alone will not provide the resources needed to support professional local journalism at our current level of service into the future. Like so many other local news outlets, we also must rely on community funding through donations from individuals, businesses, and institutions.
A special fundraising initiative: Health care reporting for our community
We are pleased to announce that CDN is the recipient of a grant from Report for America. Report for America is a national service program that places journalists into local newsrooms to report on under-covered issues and communities. This grant will fund a portion of the salary of a new reporter who will cover health care in our community—a topic that has consistently topped lists of CDN reader requests. Their reporting will include public health, health care systems, and local health care institutions and providers. The new reporter will begin work in July 2025. You can learn more about this position here.
Report for America's stated mission is not only to support journalists who do important on-the-ground local journalism but also to foster community support of local news organizations. Report for America believes that in the long run local journalism will not thrive without direct community support. To that end, and as a condition of this grant, CDN is required to raise from the community the balance of the salary, benefits, and other costs related to our new health care reporter.
