I've visited the middle school a few times for my reporting, and it's not an ideal place for a child to learn and thrive. But school districts are in an impossible situation: they want — and need — to upgrade and rebuild facilities that are no longer serving students. There are also some serious safety concerns — at Meridian, there are walls in the middle school that don't have rebar in them, Superintendent James Everett told me.
However, to implement those upgrades, they must ask people to open their wallets and agree to additional taxes. And not just a majority of people: they need a supermajority of 60% to agree to be taxed more.
This year, a couple of proposals to the state Legislature to lower the passage rate to a simple majority or 55% had some momentum, but died in committee. It's unclear to me what these schools — Blaine, Lynden and Meridian — do next.
