From the newsroom

I've written about Northwest Youth Services a lot — certainly a lot more than I expected to when I took my job as an investigative journalist with CDN.

But what shines through every time I write about the troubled organization is how fundamental its services are to the goals of our communities in Whatcom and Skagit counties.

At-risk youth, whether they are 13 or 22 years old, are some of the most vulnerable members of our society. How we take care of them and support them says a lot about who we are as a community.

This is why we have given mandates to local governments to help tackle the issue. And, in the hope of multiplying their impact, governments partner with Northwest Youth Services.

Over and over again, I'm reminded how reliant local and state governments are on NWYS and its services.

It certainly creates a power dynamic with challenges.
