| Symonds and Sefcovic close in on deal | The finishing touches are being put on Sir Keir Starmer's post-Brexit reset of relations with the EU ahead of a major summit on 19 May. Europe minister Nick Thomas-Symonds and EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic caught up in London on Tuesday to "take stock" of the progress made so far. The Independent revealed last month that team Keir has budged on the EU's demands for a post-Brexit youth mobility scheme between the UK and Europe. Other details that have emerged so far include the likely softening of Britain's stance on EU access to UK fishing waters, as well as the UK being prepared to accept some regulatory alignment with Brussels on food standards. After months where it appeared Sir Keir's much-hyped reset had stalled, the re-election of Donald Trump seems to have injected talks with a fresh sense of urgency. | |

| Former Permanent Secretary for the Department for Exiting the European Union, Philip Rycroft | "Youth mobility has always been a big ask from the EU side. We should be really flattered by that, that all these youngsters from the EU want to come to the UK to study, to work, to visit, to learn the language." | |
