Tony Blair at war with Ed Miliband over net zero |
Tony Blair has urged Keir Starmer to ditch net zero, saying voters feel "that they're being asked to make financial sacrifices and changes in lifestyle when they know that their impact on global emissions is minimal". He said: "Political leaders by and large know that the debate has become irrational", but are "terrified of saying so, for fear of being accused of being 'climate deniers'." I have written that Blair is right to point out that climate policies have run ahead of public opinion, and that effective action needs a rethink. He has developed his argument, which he first made two years ago, that "net zero in one country" makes no sense. Ed Miliband, the energy secretary, has fought back, with a source close to him telling The Independent: "We've just won an election in part on an argument that we need to speed up the clean energy transition. The PM said last week that clean energy is in the DNA of the government." |
