1 big thing: Miller's influence grows

Stephen Miller is attracting buzz inside the White House as a top national security adviser candidate, five sources tell Axios' Marc Caputo.

  • Why it matters: Miller is one of President Trump's longest-serving and most-trusted aides. He is the White House deputy chief of staff for policy, as well as the White House homeland security adviser. And he's the brain behind the president's controversial immigration crackdown.

🧮 Miller's name surfaced shortly after Trump removed Mike Waltz as national security adviser yesterday, and nominated him to become the next UN ambassador.

  • Secretary of State Marco Rubio is temporarily taking over Waltz's responsibilities. But sources familiar with his thinking say he's busy enough running the State Department.

Between the lines: Trump has a penchant for putting his faith in a small number of advisers and piling responsibilities on their plates.

  • Insiders say it wouldn't be unusual for Miller to hold even more titles, just as Rubio does.

2. 💰 Budget winners & losers

Data: White House. Chart: Erin Davis/Axios Visuals

Defense spending, border security and health care for veterans are the biggest winners in President Trump's budget proposal, Axios' Ben Berkowitz writes from the White House framework released today.

  • Programs focused on housing, health and climate stand to take massive cuts.

The big picture: The budget reflects Trump's long-standing plans to spend more on defense and security, while slashing social programs and those seen as aligned with liberal priorities.

  • The fiscal blueprint cuts discretionary non-defense spending by $163 billion — a 22.6% cut.

Congress can help keep teens safe with app store parental approval

Federal legislation requiring app store parental approval and age verification for teens under 16 would put parents in charge of teen app downloads – and help them keep teens safe.

Why it's important: 3 of 4 parents agree that teens under 16 shouldn't be able to download apps without their approval.

3. Catch me up

A mirrored bar chart shows how Georgia voters say they feel about how President Trump has handled his second term. 85.4% of Republicans say they somewhat or strongly approve, contrasted with 3.2% of Democrats and 43.1% of total respondents.

  1. 🍑 Most Georgia voters say they disapprove of President Trump's policies on the economy, immigration and DEI, Axios Atlanta's Thomas Wheatley writes from an Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll. Keep reading.
  2. 💼 Today's jobs report was stronger than expected: 177,000 jobs added in April, and the unemployment rate held at 4.2%. It's a good sign for an economy that's feared to slow with the White House trade policies. Go deeper.
  3. 🏫 President Trump said again today that he'd revoke Harvard's tax-exempt status, which a Harvard spokesperson said has "no legal basis." Go deeper.

4. 👔 1 for the road: Black Dandyism explained

The theme of this year's Met Gala, "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style," centers on Black Dandyism: well-tailored, creative clothing donned with confidence.

  • The Super Bowl of fashion, coming Monday, will highlight overlooked contributions of Black culture on how we dress, Axios' Paige Hopkins writes.

📖 The theme is inspired by Monica L. Miller's book, "Slaves to Fashion," which documents Black dandies' emergence and evolution across the Black diaspora.

  • Fashion writer Ty Gaskins says Black Dandyism is "about identity, power, and resistance. In a world where Black people have been marginalized, the dandy became a figure who defied the rigid categories of race and class that sought to confine them."

🕶️ Want to try it? Think of someone who's always put together, well-groomed and in flawlessly fitted pieces.

  • This year's Met Gala co-chairs are perfect examples: Actor Colman Domingo, Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton, artist A$AP Rocky, artist Pharrell Williams, plus Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. Basketball star LeBron James is an honorary co-chair.
