Even standing 100 yards from the epicenter of swarming angry bees, they surrounded me as I reported on the crash Friday. The key, I've been told, is remaining calm, despite the high pitched buzz in your ears and them bumping up against your face in warning.

It wasn't until they started getting caught in my hair that I realized two things: I should have worn a hat and I was overdue for a haircut.

Interviewing the beekeepers was also fraught, as no matter how far away they were from the fallen bee boxes, they brought their own little cloud of fury with them, leaving me shouting questions from a "safer" distance.

Despite being stung a couple times, it was such a pleasure to be on-scene and watching the community of beekeepers come together to rehouse millions of bees.

The accident inadvertently opened my eyes to the vital role commercial honey bees play in our food system, but more on that soon!
