Hello!

As TikTok nears another deadline to sell its U.S. business, the company is shaking up some of its senior roles.

In a note to staff Thursday, which The Information reviewed, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew said that Adam Presser, TikTok's head of operations and trust & safety, will become head of USDS—a unit the company created to secure U.S. user data. It's a step up for Presser, who has been at TikTok since 2022 and is already one of the most senior U.S. executives

Sandeep Grover, who has been at TikTok since 2022 and was previously at Google, will become the new head of global trust and safety. Meanwhile, Andy Bonillo, who is currently leading USDS, will move into a senior adviser role, reporting to Presser.

The moves raise questions about possible changes at USDS. TikTok spent more than $1.5 billion on this effort to wall off U.S. consumer data with cloud provider Oracle. But as my colleagues reported in detail here, those efforts failed to prevent Congress from passing a law that banned the app in the U.S. unless it broke off from its China parent.

The rest of the changes mostly centered on the company's trust and safety work, including combining TikTok's core product and trust-and-safety product teams. This will "help us move faster as we develop the next generation of safety technology," Chew said in his note, which was earlier reported by TechCrunch.

Meanwhile TikTok Live, TikTok's livestreaming feature, will also get a new leader in Jenny Zi, who previously focused on e-commerce strategy.

It's been a bumpy year for TikTok employees, who have weathered job cuts, a brief shutdown and a whole lot of twists and turns around whether the app's U.S. business will be sold.

President Trump has issued three executive orders to allow more time for a deal to be hashed out. But the groups involved in it need China's approval for it to go through, which has so far remained elusive.

TikTok seems to be operating as though it will happen soon. As we reported earlier this month, the company is working on a new version of its app for U.S. users, which the company is working toward launching in app stores on September 5.

It's not clear who will run it—and whether the recent reorganization has anything to do with the planned sale. Reorgs are fairly common at tech companies, after all. But it's always worth keeping an eye on who is rising through the ranks…

Now over to Alex Perry for what else is going on…
