Emma Raducanu opened her maiden Canadian Open in Montreal with a commanding 6-2, 6-4 victory over close friend Elena-Gabriela Ruse, rising to a three-year high of No. 33 in the world rankings. Battling rapid back-to-back tournaments—from a Washington semifinal only three days earlier—Raducanu showed no signs of fatigue on court.
During her on-court interview, the 2021 U.S. Open champion inadvertently praised her Washington "week in Chicago," before bursting into laughter and correcting herself to "DC." Despite four double faults, Raducanu dominated on the return and will face No. 32 seed Peyton Stearns next, while British coach Mark Petchey made a return to her box.
