With only three weeks left of my summer science writing fellowship, my time with CDN is almost over. Over the last couple of months, I've realized that Bellingham is a pretty great place to be a science writer. There's a lot to learn about both land and sea here: Through this job, I've gotten up close and personal with creatures as different as honeybees and eelgrass.
But beyond having astonishing nature, Bellingham is full of people working to protect and understand it. I've gotten to know nonprofits like RE Sources and Whatcom Million Trees Project, which recently celebrated its success in getting the state to ban the sale of invasive English and Atlantic ivy.
Getting to know a place through the people who care about its nature is a real privilege. If you know any nature lovers with a story to tell, I'd love to hear it — reach out! I want to learn all I can before I head out of here.
