Trump and Starmer find unexpected common ground | Many British commentators cannot understand why Donald Trump seems to like the "woke, radical, left-wing human rights lawyer" who is British prime minister, as my colleague Sean O'Grady wrote. But it was always unlikely that Keir Starmer was going to be embarrassed by the US president on his Scottish golf tour, despite the apparent differences between the US and UK governments over Gaza. Those differences were easily glossed over by Trump. Asked by journalists about the vexed subject of recognising Palestine as a state, he said: "I'm not going to take a position. I don't mind him [Starmer] taking a position. I'm looking to getting people fed right now. That's the number one position, because you have a lot of starving people." David Maddox, our political editor, looks at the British politics of Palestinian statehood as the number of MPs signing a statement calling for it went above 255. Meanwhile Kemi Badenoch clashed with Bob Geldof, who accused the Israeli government of "lying" about Gaza aid. | |
