East Providence, R.I.—A nonprofit shop on 991 Waterman Ave is turning surplus—and often discarded—materials into a crafters' paradise. The Creative Reuse Center (CRC) rescues items from local landfills and offers them at a fraction of retail cost: thread for $2, paints for 50¢ and storage boxes starting at $1.
Open Saturdays and Sundays 12–4 p.m., and Tuesdays and Wednesdays 9 a.m.–1 p.m., CRC provides on-site tools—sewing machines, button makers and cutting devices—and hosts year-round workshops. Residents and teachers alike can donate yarn, fabric scraps, buttons and more, keeping supplies in circulation and out of the trash.
