Washington D.C. and the respective party campaign arms were rocked by the news of a pivotal senator reportedly planning to retire.
CBS News and CNN reported on Friday that Sen. Joni Ernst, a two-term Republican from Iowa, was telling confidantes that she would not seek re-election next year.
Ernst's retirement at 55, strikingly young for a senator, would throw another Senate seat firmly into play for Democrats next year. It'll be an uphill battle — but Democrats just won a key race in the Iowa state legislature this week.
Democrats could flip her seat and win two vacant seats in Ohio and North Carolina, and force Republicans into a 50-50 tie. A further victory in either Maine or Texas, where GOP incumbents both have reasons to fret, would end a short-lived Republican majority.
It's far from a sure bet for Democrats, however, and the party's resources will be stretched thin. Republicans are going to go all out to protect Ernst's seat, retirement or not.
Still, the Iowa Democrats running to flip the seat blue are taking today's development as a clear sign that the momentum is on their side.
