Hello,

Venture capital is on a wild ride. Money is pouring in, but not everywhere. We published three breaking stories last week, and asked our new Deep Research AI tool for thoughts on what's driving this dynamic.

What's Changing in Funding Right Now?

  • AI's Unstoppable Reign: Investors are pouring massive capital into a few perceived winners like OpenAI (raising a staggering $40 billion) as well as data center, server and model-API providers like Fireworks AI (discussing a $4 billion valuation) and Crusoe. This is driven by aggressive revenue projections, including at OpenAI rival Cohere, despite high burn rates and intense talent wars pushing up compensation.
  • The IPO Market Awakens: After dormancy, the IPO market is showing signs of life. Figma's incredible public debut created major VC winners and will encourage other mature private companies to consider going public. Some companies strategically delay IPOs with large private rounds, such as Cerebras Systems, which is seeking up to $1 billion.
  • The Rise of Physical AI: The market is expanding beyond software to robotics drones and advanced hardware. Companies like Amprius Technologies are finding new high-margin markets in these areas driven by immense power needs.
  • Concentration & "Insider Rounds": Instead of broad investment, capital is concentrated into perceived winners. Rounds led by existing shareholders are on track to surpass previous records as VCs double down on their most promising portfolio companies. Mega-funds and even solo GPs are also on the rise to write larger checks.
  • Focus on Fundamentals & Data Wars: There's a renewed emphasis on profitability and efficiency. Investors are more discerning, pushing companies to conserve cash and demonstrate sound business models. Meanwhile, new "data wars" are emerging as enterprise incumbents limit data access for AI startups, influencing investment decisions based on a startup's ability to navigate these "walled gardens".
