From the newsroom

I love working at CDN for a number of reasons, but chief among them is the excuse to write about talented, compassionate people. Former Washington State Poet Laureate Rena Priest has both those qualities in spades. A few weeks ago, Priest spoke with me about her new essay collection, "Positively Uncivilized."

The ensuing profile is now live on cascadiadaily.com, and you can pick up a copy of the book tonight at Village Books after Priest's author talk. (Spoiler: I read "Positively Uncivilized" cover-to-cover, and believe it should be required reading for everyone in Whatcom County.)

On another note, CDN's final election town hall is scheduled for tomorrow at Sehome High School. Ron Judd and Dean Wright will be leading a discussion with City Council candidates; attendance is free, and more information is available on our website.

Other weekend happenings include the fifth annual Blaine Oysterfest. This year's event takes place in conjunction with Blaine's Seaside Bash, "a festival dedicated to celebrating community by the sea."

Closer to Bellingham, the Northwest Mushroomers Annual Wild Mushroom Show is happening from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Sunday. Isaac Stone Simonelli's 2024 piece, Foragers and fungi enthusiasts build community around mushrooms, is a fascinating introduction to the fungi enthusiasts who bring the event to life.

Finally, this year's Lynden Music Festival features a dynamic line-up, with performances running today through Sunday. (It also doubles as an excuse to sample treats from Lynden Dutch Bakery, another recent profile subject in CDN's Living section.)
