There are also plenty of signs of the hours of work that have gone into mucking out houses and clearing away debris after the historic natural disaster.
I spent my afternoon at the Sumas Advent Christian Church, where community members were serving up bowls of hot soup and Christmas cookies — homecooked food for anyone who wanted it. Many showed up in holiday wear, unwilling to let the floods sweep away their Christmas spirit.
Whatcom Strong was also set up at the church. The vice president of the nonprofit, Ashley Butenschoen, was there with volunteers handing out Christmas gifts to impacted families, as well as providing piles of stocking stuffers.
"We are just able to provide some sort of cheer to them and for them to know that we care," Butenschoen said.
