"Suspect each moment," wrote John Updike in A Month of Sundays, "for it is a thief, tiptoeing away with more than it brings." Ain't that the truth. Louis here, writing the newsletter for the first time in a hot minute, and wondering idly if it isn't high time that everyone forgave Updike his more objectionable proclivities and allow his wonderful writing back into fashion.
I don't know about you, but I'm in a surprisingly good mood today, after a week full of lovely, thief-like moments. I won't bore you with the minutiae. But it's also been a week of really strong stuff on The Independent's culture desk. First, Tom Murray did a really fab interview with Peter Claffey, the rugby player-turned actor who plays the hulking lead of the new Game of Thrones spin-off. He's clearly quite an open book, and manages to make being cast in a major TV show sound quite the gross experience. Alice Saville, meanwhile, made the new immersive theatre show by Dante Or Die sound fiercely intriguing.
This week also saw the Oscar nominations announced. There may have been no love for the terrific No Other Place, The Testament of Ann Lee or Die My Love, but thank God there was room for F1 in Best Picture. Truly, no film had a faster car all year. Adam White wrote with his usual panache about the – ahem – surprise in the Best Actress category.
Lydia Spencer-Elliott wrote a great retrospective on High School Musical, a cornball teen classic that I must admit passed me by as a child, nourished as I was by my diet of extremely heteronormative male media. (Ah, youth!) As this piece shows, the film didn't really need my support anyway.
Elsewhere, I interviewed Park Chan Wook, who talked about the peril and misconceptions around the Korean film industry. A great director, and a really quite engaging chat, I felt.
Anyway, I'm off to watch the Traitors final... by the time you read this, our review will be up. Find it on our site! Also really recommend Annabel's interview with Jennette McCurdy, linked below as this week's Saturday Interview.
Until next time,
