Suella Braverman defects to Reform | The one-time standard bearer of the Conservative right and two-time home secretary Suella Braverman has become Reform's eighth MP. Nigel Farage had to finesse his past description of her as "absolutely pathetic" on immigration by saying she was "utterly useless, as they all were", but at least she opposed the European Court of Human Rights and "is now prepared to put her hands up and say, 'We got it wrong'". He contrasted her with Priti Patel, "who says she did nothing wrong despite opening the doors to the biggest levels of immigration Britain ever saw", and with Boris Johnson: "I'm not recognising those who were part of the problem and still refuse to accept it." A Tory spokesperson made one bad point, "The Conservatives did all we could to look after Suella's mental health, but she was clearly very unhappy," which had to be retracted. And one good one: "As always happens with Reform, they unveil defections just when the Labour government is tearing itself to pieces – Rayner, Mandelson, now Burnham." | |
