Donald Trump threatened on Thursday to use the U.S. military to put down protests in Minneapolis as the city continues to display shock and anger over the killing of Renee Good by an ICE agent.
"If the corrupt politicians of Minnesota don't obey the law and stop the professional agitators and insurrectionists from attacking the Patriots of I.C.E., who are only trying to do their job, I will institute the INSURRECTION ACT, which many Presidents have done before me, and quickly put an end to the travesty that is taking place in that once great State," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Democrats accused the president of trying to terrorize communities with a massive federal presence that has already swelled
since Good's shooting death last week.
But the deployment of troops and National Guard under Trump's command would be an unprecedented new step that could cause an already tense national mood to explode.
"It feels like that has been part of the plan of creating this surge so that he could have his authoritarianism be fully carried out," Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) told The Independent on Thursday.
"He's a wannabe dictator who's trying to claw as much power as he can. And I think a lot of this, this chaos, this brutality, this confusion, is really to wear down the American people so that he can tear them down."
Even as polling shows a clear majority of Americans want the agent who shot Good held accountable, Trump is barreling forward with ICE's snatch-and-grab agenda.
