Could Reform's Farage and Restore's Lowe become friends reunited? |
After weeks of lying low, Nigel Farage has managed to entirely dominate the political headlines today – for more than one reason.
His party's latest pledge to deploy Royal Navy ships to stop small boat arrivals from France drew plenty of criticism, with many voicing scepticism over the viability and legality of the plan.
But a potential pact between him and his political ally-turned-nemesis Rupert Lowe, the former Reform UK MP who is now the leader of Restore Britain, threatened to overshadow his big policy announcement.
In a video post on X over the weekend, Lowe said that he was willing to put his differences with Farage aside...but he later accused him of lying after the Reform UK leader said that he “reached out” to him.
In further trouble for Reform, deputy leader Richard Tice has become the latest member to be investigated by the standards commissioner for allegedly failing to declare an interest.
Another quiet day in the world of Westminster.

He got away with it. He broke his promise to the people of the city-region to serve out his term as mayor. Not only did he win a Reform-voting seat to enter the Commons and become prime minister, but Labour won the by-election for the mayoralty easily on Thursday.
The risk of losing Greater Manchester to Reform was the reason Labour’s national executive wouldn’t initially let Andy Burnham stand for parliament – but he showed that under his leadership Labour could smash Nigel Farage’s party.
Thursday’s vote suggests that Burnham has chosen just the right moment to make his move for No 10, as Reform and the Greens, who ate away at Labour support from both sides, are suddenly losing ground.

Andy Burnham has vowed to be “relentless” as he pledged to tackle smuggling gangs and drive down small boat crossings.

There is no doubting this prime minister’s intention and desire to end the small boat crisis. To be fair, there is no doubting his predecessor’s either. But whatever Andy Burnham does – reinforcing the border police, paying money to France, having that one in one out agreement again with France – will be of minimal impact as long as we are bound by the ECHR. It is necessary to tackle that issue which is the root cause of the inefficacy of our actions. The way out, therefore, is to leave the ECHR, as Kemi Badenoch has rightly assessed and proposed.

The Tories had 14 years to get to grips with this problem, and by backing Brexit they made it worse. They are all talk and cost, as the Rwanda fiasco showed. Even if it had worked, it was highly expensive and would have only dealt with a fraction of the numbers.
