Giant Steps
The book business lost a titan last week in Len Riggio, who made Barnes & Noble a behemoth, while the Big Five publishers, the Authors Guild, and more got together to sue Florida over a new book banning law. Speaking of the Big Five, Penguin Random House is having a good 2024 in part thanks to last year's buyouts, and Simon & Schuster continues its international expansion by acquiring Australia's Affirm Press. The International Publishers Association is asking publishers to document their sustainability efforts in an effort to increase accountability, and the U.K.'s Book Industry Communication is working to explain the European Accessibility Act to publishers. Plus, Little, Brown crashed a Kamala Harris–inspired picture book and the Texas book business is readying for T*Rex.
