| | Democrats fall short in Tennessee despite anti-Trump headwinds | |
| Matt Van Epps won the special election for Tennessee's 7th congressional district on Tuesday evening. He notched a single-digit victory in a district where Republicans won by more than 20 points just one year ago. His victory over Aftyn Behn means that Republicans will notch their majority in the House up by one seat — a seat they'd previously held until the surprise resignation of Rep. Mark Green in July, less than halfway through his term. Green opted for employment in the private sector over further service in Congress, where he was on his second term. The comparatively narrow margin in a district Donald Trump had won by 22 points in 2024 is a clear sign that the Democrats are in a relatively stronger position than the party was last year, when it suffered a down-ballot rattling thanks in part to a chaotic presidential ticket. But it's also a sign that Republicans can still hang on to power in the face of strong headwinds. While holding on to the House majority may prove to be a lost cause, the GOP still remains favored to hold on to the Senate majority it won in 2024. As one member of the House GOP caucus put it to Politico on Tuesday evening: "Republicans can survive if we play team and the Trump administration officials play smart. Neither is certain." | "At The Independent, we've always believed journalism should do more than describe the world – it should try to improve it. This Christmas, we're asking for your help again as we launch our new campaign with the charity Missing People – the SafeCall appeal. Every year, more than 70,000 children in the UK are reported missing. The misery that follows – for the child, for the family, for the community – is often hidden. Too many of these young people have nowhere to turn when they need help most. SafeCall will change that. Our goal is to raise £165,000 to help Missing People launch this new, free service – designed with the input of young people themselves – offering round-the-clock support, advice and a route to safety." | |

| - No peace with Putin: A top Russian official said on Tuesday that a much-anticipated meeting between Vladimir Putin and top allies of Donald Trump failed to make any sort of progress towards reaching a peace deal in Ukraine. Follow The Independent for live coverage.
- Trump goes on racist rant against Somalis: In remarks at a Cabinet meeting Tuesday, Trump said Somalia is "barely a country" and said of refugees and immigrants alike: "We don't want them in our country ... their country stinks … they complain, they do nothing but bitch, we don't want them in our country. Let them go back to their country and fix it." Alex Woodward has more on this latest example of unhinged bigotry.
