| Keir Starmer cracks the whip | Markus Campbell-Savours, the MP for Penrith and Solway, has been suspended as a Labour MP for voting against the Budget measure imposing inheritance tax on farms last night. No government can afford to let its MPs vote against the Budget without disciplinary action, but his suspension is likely to be brief. As Kemi Badenoch noted at Prime Minister's Questions, Keir Starmer suspended seven MPs for voting against the King's Speech last year, only to let most of them back in – and eventually doing what they wanted, which was to lift the two-child benefit limit. Campbell-Savours is an unlikely farmers' hero. He sits for the rural seat that was most of Rory Stewart's constituency, but he is an electrician and the son of Dale Campbell-Savours, the Labour MP for Workington from 1979 to 2001, who is now a peer. | |

| "At The Independent, we've always believed journalism should do more than describe the world – it should try to improve it. This Christmas, we're asking for your help again as we launch our new campaign with the charity Missing People – the SafeCall appeal. Every year, more than 70,000 children in the UK are reported missing. The misery that follows – for the child, for the family, for the community – is often hidden. Too many of these young people have nowhere to turn when they need help most. SafeCall will change that. Our goal is to raise £165,000 to help Missing People launch this new, free service – designed with the input of young people themselves – offering round-the-clock support, advice and a route to safety." | |
