So you want to start your own company, huh? Whether you're starting a side hustle or venturing out on your own completely, setting up your entrepreneurial venture is scary and overwhelming, especially when it comes to the business stuff like legal and finances.
If I could go back in time, here's a cheatsheet I'd share with myself:
Build Your Business Foundation: Choose a Name: Select a unique, memorable business name that embodies your vision. Make sure it's not already taken by conducting a
US Trademark Search.
Legally Establish Your Business: Register your S-Corp or LLC through services like
RocketLawyer. An LLC offers personal asset protection, while an S-Corp might be better for tax advantages.
Then secure an
Employer Identification Number (EIN) and keep an eye out for a letter from the IRS asking you to file
Form 1065.
Master Your Finances: Open Financial Accounts: Establish a separate business bank account and credit card to keep your personal and business finances distinct.
Set Up Financial Management: Invest in accounting software (I used
Wave and then
Quickbooks) and consider hiring a CPA, especially if you're setting up an S-Corp.
Remember, business taxes are paid quarterly, and if you have employees, payroll setup is crucial.
Streamline Operations: Set the Rules: Draft clear bylaws or an operating agreement if you're an LLC/S-Corp. This outlines your business's ownership structure and operational protocols.
Permits & Licenses: Depending on your industry and location, you may need specific permits or licenses. Don't overlook the importance of business insurance to protect against unforeseen liabilities.
Record-Keeping Is Key: Maintain meticulous financial and legal records. This includes transaction details, contracts, and business documents, ensuring they are stored securely and organized.
Get A Lean Software Stack: Embrace technology to simplify operations, but don't overdo it. You don't need a lot to go far. Use tools like Google Drive for file sharing,
Notion for organization, and
Harvest for time tracking to significantly enhance efficiency and keep you organized.
Remember, setting up your business is just the first step—the real magic comes from your passion and grit. Dive in, trust what you know, and watch your business idea take off!
