1 big thing: 📈 Upward mobility revelation

Raj Chetty, the economist behind the national study that once ranked Charlotte 50th for upward mobility, says his research group has found that an area's employment rate correlates to children's chances of future success.

Why it matters: Presenting his data to a Charlotte audience on Friday, Chetty said that a deeper dive into the research reveals that a child's parents' employment status is less an indicator of their future success than the overall employment health of the surrounding community.

  • "If you're growing up in a community where lots of other people are losing their jobs, for some reason that seems to limit your own prospects of rising up," Chetty said.

The big picture: Chetty's findings give a clearer idea of how Charlotte can strategize and continue improving its economic mobility standing in the future.

Zoom in: When unemployment is high in a community, the adults aren't contributing financially to their schools or local programs. They also aren't interacting as much with each other, or breaking through class or race barriers.

2. Mark Robinson's top aides resign

North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, North Carolina's Republican nominee for governor, announced a major staffing shakeup Sunday, days after CNN reported that he had called himself a "black NAZI" on an online porn forum.

The big picture: Robinson, who denies making comments outlined in the CNN investigation, announced in a statement that his top adviser Conrad Pogorzelski; Chris Rodriguez, campaign manager; Heather Whillier, finance director; and Jason Rizk, deputy campaign manager "have stepped down from their roles with the campaign."

  • Robinson said in a statement that he looks forward "to announcing new staff roles in the coming days."

Zoom in: Pogorzelski said in a text message Axios: "The reports are true that I, along with others from the campaign have left of our own accord."

  • He said in addition to those announced that political director John Kontoulas, political director Jackson Lohrer and director of operations Patrick Riley had also resigned.

Zoom out: Doug Heye, a Republican strategist from North Carolina, told Axios over the phone that the staffing overhaul "doesn't matter because the campaign was already over."

Charlotte Douglas International Airport ranks below average for customer satisfaction among mega airports in the United States and Canada, according to a new J.D. Power survey.

Why it matters: Charlotte's biggest issue is a problem every airport wants to have — it's seeing a record number of passengers, Michael Taylor, J.D. Power's managing director of travel, hospitality and retail, tells Axios.

Yes, but: With more passengers comes more congestion, which can make it more difficult to get to the terminal, through security or to your gate.

What they're saying: "That's what's really driving down satisfaction [in] Charlotte," Taylor says. "There's really not anything the actual airport has done worse in the last couple of years."

6. 🏈 Lost & Found's rebrand

A former South End nightclub will reopen on Saturday as Must Be Nice, a neighborhood bar and lounge.

Catch up quick: After five years in business, Lost & Found closed in July with plans to open as a neighborhood bar in time for football season.

The vibe: Must Be Nice will be more "casual" and "sports-focused," says owner Orlando Botero. It's a place where you can grab a cocktail after work, catch a live DJ on weekends and watch football on Sundays.

Sip on this: The cocktail menu has nine signature drinks — including a spiced apple gin fizz, smoked old fashioned and a lavender martini.

Dig in: The menu will focus on flatbreads, pretzels, humus and charcuterie.

What else to expect

Albertine, a Mediterranean restaurant by Joe and Katy Kindred, opened yesterday in Uptown.

Why it matters: The Kindreds are behind the treasured Kindred restaurant in Davidson, Milkbread and Hello, Sailor. Kindred has consistently been considered one of the best restaurants in the region since its 2015 opening.

Dig in: The seasonal menu at Albertine offers dishes from the Mediterranean region with a Southern twist, like the crispy pickle-brined quail in an Aleppo pepper sauce paying homage to Nashville Hot Chicken.
