Litigation over the collapse of Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge is ramping up, as Maryland and other plaintiffs bring new civil claims against the owner and operator of the cargo ship that slammed into the structure in March. Our colleague David Thomas in this week's Legal Fee Tracker looks at how some of the private lawyers with government clients expect to get paid. Maryland's lawyers include Mark Lanier's Lanier Law Firm and Kelley Drye & Warren. The state's fee agreement grants the law firms a percentage of any recovery based on the size and timing of a settlement or judgment, and is structured so that they would receive a smaller proportion as the amount increases. The Maryland attorney general's office said it will "devote as many lawyers as necessary to effectively pursue the state's claims." Baltimore City and Baltimore County also have hired outside legal teams for bridge litigation. Lawyers for defendants Grace Ocean and Synergy Marine at law firms Duane Morris and Blank Rome did not immediately respond to requests for comment. |
