The Return
A federal judge has ordered the Crawford County Public Library in Arkansas to put LGBTQ books back into general circulation in the latest legal win for librarians and freedom to read advocates. PNBA's fall trade show, which wrapped up earlier this week in Portland, Ore., saw a big boost in attendance, marking a return to pre-pandemic numbers. In Boston, publishers, printers, and book producers of all sorts met this week to discuss printing, paper availability, sustainability, and more at Book Manufacturing Mastered. Literary agents of color who work with faith-based publishers tell PW that they are seeing a pronounced drop in interest in books by BIPOC authors in the religious segment. And Reese Witherspoon is teaming with Harlan Coben to pen her debut novel. Despite rain, this year's Brooklyn Book Festival—New York City's largest free lit fest—made a splash over the weekend, reports the Brooklyn Eagle. For Pine State Publicity's Substack, author Lilly Dancyger considers how placing "spinoff essays" can be a boon for writers looking to build buzz around their books. The Washington Post takes a look at a new exhibition at the Vienna central library, which collects more than 8,000 improvised bookmarks found by librarians. For the New York Times, Dwight Garner takes a literary tour of Dublin. Over at Book Reporter, Carol Fitzgerald and readers pay tribute to the late author Nelson DeMille. And novelist Ella Leffland has died at 92.
