Not all paths to journalism are a straight line. Mine started with an arguably niche degree in underwater archaeology and a minor in creative writing. While obscure, my undergraduate training is more useful than many might expect.
I was born with insatiable curiosity, and archaeology gave me the tools to access stories otherwise lost to the world.
It opened the door to my first newspaper column (one on scuba diving) and continues to inform how I unearth stories.
There are so many stories that journalists — and archaeologists — can help tell in this community. I applaud the county for prioritizing the protection and preservation of cultural resources with its effort to hire a full-time archaeologist.
While the mishandling of culturally sensitive materials (read about it here) will without a doubt be an expensive lesson, it appears to be one the county is determined to learn from.
