A Little Alleviation
Bookstores and bookselling organizations are working to help their fellow booksellers in the American Southeast following Hurricane Helene. Book manufacturers are breathing a sigh of relief with news that the European Union Deforestation Regulation is likely to roll out a year later than anticipated. And, as the New York Times reports, additional relief has come to the supply chain in the form of the suspension of the longshoremen's strike following a new wage offer from port employers. Still, it's not all rosy: in the rapidly gentrified neighborhood of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, the beloved indie comics store Desert Island Books is being priced out after 16 years. Slate talks with Rosalie Stewart, who joined Penguin Random House as its inaugural senior public policy manager last month, about her plan to fight book banning on the ground and in the courts. CNN says that Skyhorse Publishing asked for a $250,000 fee in response to their recent interview request with Melania Trump. R.F. Kuang's Yellowface is getting a series adaptation, reports Variety. Anne Rice's estate will hold an online auction of selected items from her collection, per Nola.com. Prospect magazine goes beyond Hillbilly Elegy with a survey of contemporary Appalachian literature. For Words Without Borders, Anton Hur looks at the challenges facing emerging literary translators. And the New York Times profiles Confessions of a Shopaholic author Sophie Kinsella, whose latest rom-com was inspired by her recent brain cancer diagnosis.
