Behind the curtains

From the battlegrounds of Pennsylvania and Wisconsin to a sunny Arizona and a rainy North Carolina still recovering from Hurricane Helene, my colleagues captured photographs that told the story of the tens of millions of Americans who went to the polls this week.

This Wider Image photo essay showcases some of the photos, which depict the elation of Donald Trump supporters and the despair of those who wanted Kamala Harris to win.

As Reuters Senior Photographer Mike Blake puts it, "still images have a way of evoking moments like these much better than video, or even just seeing something with your own eyes. These are the moments that make up all our lives. A picture has this amazing ability to tell a story with no language and no timeline; it's frozen, forever, in time."
