After a tense election week, it's understandable to crave some levity. If you (like most of us) could use a laugh right now, know that the Upfront's Bellingham Improv Festival returns this weekend.

The annual event draws in improv troupes from across the region, with comedic performances and workshops happening through Sunday.

Other uplifting events include Nite Theatre's performance of "Legally Blonde: The Musical" at Mount Vernon's Lincoln Theatre, plus the Blue Room's ever-entertaining Battle of the Bands event this evening. Also in the realm of music, I'm looking forward to Verboten's album release party at the Temple Bar this Sunday.

Parents may be interested in Wild Whatcom's two place-based community events this weekend. First up is Salmon's Journey, an educational "field trip"-style outing at Lake Whatcom. Community park events, called Wild Things, also happen every Saturday morning (this month at Maritime Heritage Park). Participants are requested to register in advance online.

Finally, it's never too early to get in the holiday spirit: Bellingham Covenant Church has its 42nd annual Holiday Bazaar this Saturday. It's an opportunity to get a jump on Christmas cookies — or just eat copious amounts of Christmas cookies at the bake sale. (If you choose the cookie route, I promise I won't judge.)
