| Brexit and Trump leave Starmer at a crossroads | The re-election of Donald Trump has thrown a spanner in the works of Sir Keir Starmer's much-hyped post-Brexit reset of relations with the EU. The former president is threatening a global trade war on his return to the White House, and Britain stands at a crossroads. The UK can cosy up to the Republican in the hopes he is willing to finally do the free trade deal Brexit backers have long hoped for. Or it can urgently seek closer ties with Europe and stand with its nearest neighbours against Mr Trump's damaging tariffs. In trying to have his cake and eat it too, Sir Keir risks upsetting Britain's friends in Washington and Brussels, leaving the UK out in the cold as the tit-for-tat trade war plays out. Time will tell where the PM turns in the era of Trump 2.0. | |
