Donald Trump's back in the White House. But that doesn't mean you are powerless. Together, we must not step back from the urgent work of defending democracy.
We know what Trump is planning. Throughout his election campaign, he told us exactly what kind of future he wants – for the US and for the world.
An authoritarian government. Women's rights stripped away. LGBTIQ+ and minority communities under attack. Bans on migrant people arriving in the US, and mass deportation of those already in the country. A shift of global power, with the US aligned with autocracy, not democracy.
Sadly, too much of the media was complicit in Trump's win. In recent weeks, we've seen one power-hungry billionaire censoring editors at a US national newspaper, while another manipulated a social media platform to further the Republican agenda and countless columnists and TV pundits downplayed Trump's dangers.
Last night's result shows how much the world needs fearless, independent investigative journalism that can overcome censorship to hold power to account. That's the kind of media you deserve – and it's what we strive to be here at openDemocracy.
But we need your help. Will you donate £10 today? Your donation can help expose the rise of the far right, track attacks on gender rights, and ensure our reporting on the global repercussions of Trump's victory reaches as many people as possible.
