My husband and I purchased our first home about six years ago. We had fallen in love immediately with a bank-owned, three-floor log cabin in a lake community that was part of the Pine Barrens. I recall standing on the porch of our dream house alone with my husband after the Realtor left. We promised the universe that day that if we got the house, we'd rescue one dog that needed it most. It would move in with us the same day we moved in and become part of the family.

We didn't want a puppy; we wanted an unwanted dog, a large one. Those are the ones that usually get left behind in the shelters, anyway, but I wanted a large dog. It would be a companion for the kids and me because my husband worked far away during the day. The dog would watch over us. (Keep reading)
