I covered two different stories about veterans in honor of today, Veterans Day.

The first was about the expanded VA health care and benefits that are available to many local veterans who may not know they're now eligible. That story focuses on the logistics of life after service, and I enjoyed talking to the knowledgeable and helpful specialists at local county health departments and the VA.

If you are a veteran and haven't checked your eligibility for benefits recently, consider making a call or a trip to the Bellingham Vet Center, the Mount Vernon VA Clinic or the Whatcom or Skagit veterans services office.

This morning I attended the Veterans Day program at the American Legion Post 7 with photojournalist Hailey Hoffman. It was a good reminder of the pride, solidarity and impact of our veteran community and their loved ones. Afterward, Hailey and I talked about the veterans and enlisted folks in our own families and friend groups, and how it seems their service is a complicated yet inextricable part of their identities.

Thank you to all who have served this country and to all who continue to do so.
