Ah pivoting! Ross and Rachel make it look so easy. Well, it starts to become easy after you've dealt with harder challenges like losing a parent. When my dad passed away in 2016, it was the cannon event that pushed me to lose my fear of pretty much everything.
Suddenly, failing at something felt so insignificant. I started trying anything and everything to feel less
lost. I was still in university when it happened, and something switched. I dove into exercise, joined more clubs, got As in classes, and even ran for school office (I definitely wouldn't have done that before).
I was on a conventional path—A political science major trying to go to law school. But my dad's death forced me to confront the truth: I was pursuing something that didn't resonate with me anymore. Losing family made me realize I wanted to enjoy what I did, not just earn a paycheck.
Then I started content creating and acting 3 years ago. This was a massive shift for me. The idea of being creative felt so foreign, but I saw how transferable skills like emotional awareness, public speaking, and storytelling fit with my goals as a person and professional. It was scary AF, but here we are.
From this journey, I've learned that:
- It always feels impossible before you start. We expect ourselves to pivot quickly, but it takes time to build that trust in ourselves to try something new and pick ourselves up if it doesn't work out.
- Surround yourself with supportive people. Your support system can dictate how you make decisions about your ambitions. Find those who embrace change, not question it.
- Be okay with quitting. You don't have to commit to a career path, but you should commit to who you are on your career journey.
So, what's my message to you? You don't have to wait for something to go wrong to make a change. Literally, get moving—today, not tomorrow! Whether that means researching, taking a class, or attending an event, those small steps count just as much as the big ones.
